What is Empress 1908?

Gin Rickey Cocktail

It’s purple gin, guys! Indigo to be exact. When I laid eyes on it at the grocery store, I knew it was meant to be. This was one of the few times I’ve purchased something on a whim based on looks alone. I’m glad that I did. Empress 1908 Gin is distilled at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia. This hotel is known for its black tea— black tea that is infused with butterfly pea blossom. This exotic herb adds a toasty, earthy flavor to the traditional botanical flavor of gin. In addition to its exotic flavor, butterfly pea blossom gives this gin it’s rich purple color.

This gin is gorgeous. It’s also really delicious. The herbal flavors are perfectly balanced with citrus notes making it smooth and easy to drink.

Don’t have Empress on hand? Any gin will work for this classic Gin Rickey. I recommend Bombay Sapphire and Hendricks.
